Ham and Potato Bake

Cooking 101. A hearty dinner that would be a good practice piece for an eight or ten year old just embarking on a culinary career. Basically cheesy baked potatoes with a bit of ham added. I suggest ham here, but you could just as easily use shredded cooked chicken, or shredded roast pork, or even a tin of smoked fish [drained, of course]. Check what is in the store cupboard.

Ingredients.

2 tblsp olive oil.

4 medium potatoes, peeled and cut into 5mm slices.

4 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped.

Freshly ground black pepper.

2 cups shredded ham.

2 cups grated cheese.

1 cup milk.

½ cup full cream.

1 egg.

Salt to taste.

Method.

Pre-heat the oven to 180°C. Pour the oil into an oven dish and line the bottom with one third of the potatoes. Sprinkle with garlic, pepper, half the ham and one third of the cheese. Repeat once more then top with the last third of the potatoes. Sprinkle the last third of the cheese on top. Beat the milk, cream, egg and salt together and pour over all. Place in the oven and bake for 45 minutes. Serve with green beans on the side.
